Step 1 · Two ways to build a projection surface
Paint a surface, or hang screen material?
Both are genuine Rosco projection products used by studios, theatres and opera houses worldwide. Pick the route that fits your build and we'll take you deeper.
Paint a surface
Rosco TV Paint turns any wall, cyclorama or flat into a seamless, ultra-matte projection surface — engineered for contrast and camera, not decoration.
- TV Black (3% reflectance) & TV White (60% camera white)
- Seamless, permanent, no joins — ideal for fixed installs
- Cost-effective over large fixed areas
Screen material
Rosco projection screen fabric — precise optical performance for front, rear or translucent setups. Durable, washable, inherently flame-retardant, sold by the metre.
- Twin White, Front White, Grey, Black & Transparent
- Front, rear or both — matched to viewing cone & ambient light
- Portable — rigs to a frame or drop, cut to size
The first question either way
Front or rear projection?
This decides almost everything else — your surface, your space and how ambient light behaves. Here's the difference in plain terms.
Light bounces off the screen
The projector sits in front and the image reflects back to the audience. Brighter for the same projector, and it needs no room behind the screen — but the beam crosses the space, so anyone in front casts a shadow and ambient light is picked up more easily.
- Brightest image for the wattage
- No depth needed behind the screen
- Best in controlled or darker rooms
- Surfaces: Front White, Twin White, or TV White / TV Black paint
Light passes through the screen
The projector sits behind and the image transmits through the material to the audience. The beam and projector stay hidden backstage, talent can stand right in front, and it copes better with ambient light — but it needs depth behind the screen and a brighter source.
- Projector & beam hidden behind the screen
- Actors can stand in front without shadows
- Handles ambient light better
- Surfaces: Twin White, Grey, Black or Transparent material
What we'll ask to spec it right
Four things that decide your surface
Tell us these and we'll point you to the exact paint or material, and size the job.
Consider
Ambient light
How bright is the room?
In a blacked-out theatre almost anything works. In daylight, foyers or outdoor events, contrast and screen choice make or break the image.
Consider
Viewing angle
How wide is your audience?
A narrow seating bank can use a sharper, higher-contrast surface. A wide house needs a broad viewing cone so nobody sees a dim or washed-out image.
Consider
Throw & space
Room in front or behind?
Front projection needs a clear throw from the front; rear projection needs depth behind the screen but keeps the beam off your talent.
Consider
Fixed or portable
Permanent wall or a touring rig?
Painting suits a permanent cyc or studio wall. Screen material rolls up, travels and rigs to a frame or drop — cut to the size you need.
Not sure where to start?
Tell us your room, your audience and whether you're projecting front or rear, and we'll recommend paint or material and size it for you.
