About Your Sample

Your sample has been decanted by Creative Film & Theatre Solutions from genuine Rosco Tough Prime Black stock. It is supplied so you can evaluate the colour, finish, adhesion and application before purchasing a larger quantity.

1m²
Approximately enough to paint 1 m² Actual coverage will depend on the surface, application method and coating thickness.

Apply the sample to a small test area and allow it to dry thoroughly. Confirm that the adhesion, appearance and finish are suitable for your stage or project before coating a larger area.

Sample containers are supplied for product evaluation and differ from Rosco's original retail packaging.

Is Tough Prime Black Right for Your Stage?

Rosco specifically recommends Tough Prime Black for stage floors and proscenium arches. Its rich eggshell black finish resists scuffs and abrasion while providing the professional appearance expected in performance spaces.

Existing Stage Floors

Recoat worn or marked stage surfaces and refresh the black finish between productions or seasons.

New Stage Construction

Create a durable black coating on properly prepared timber and other compatible stage-building materials.

Schools & Universities

Suitable for school halls, drama rooms, lecture theatres and performing arts facilities.

Theatres & Performance Venues

Use on stage decks, proscenium areas and compatible production surfaces requiring a rich black finish.

Film & Television Studios

Coat compatible studio floors, scenic elements and black production surfaces.

Platforms & Scenery

Suitable for rostra, platforms, flats, set pieces and other scenic construction.

Why Tough Prime Black is Used on Stages

Rich Black Finish

Provides the deep black appearance Rosco specifies for stage floors and proscenium arches.

Eggshell Sheen

Tough Prime Black dries to an eggshell finish rather than a high-gloss surface.

Scuff & Abrasion Resistance

Designed for the demands of scenic workshops and performance environments.

Fast Recoat Time

At 24°C, Rosco publishes a recoat time of approximately one to two hours.

Multi-Surface Adhesion

Bonds to many materials commonly encountered in stage and scenery construction.

Water-Based

Uses water as its solvent, with soap-and-water clean-up after application.

Preparing a Stage Floor

Adhesion depends on the condition and preparation of the existing surface. Before applying your sample:

Inspect the stage

Check for loose paint, peeling coatings, contamination, damage and areas requiring repair.

Remove loose material

When painting over an existing finish, brush or scrape away loose and poorly bonded material.

Clean the surface

The surface must be clean, dry and free from dirt and grease before Tough Prime Black is applied.

Sand glossy coatings

Rosco recommends using fine sandpaper or steel wool on high-gloss or solvent-based finishes to provide additional tooth.

Remove all sanding dust

Vacuum and thoroughly remove dust produced during preparation to help achieve the best possible adhesion.

Test the prepared surface

Apply your sample to a representative area and check adhesion and appearance after it has dried.

Previously painted stages: The condition and compatibility of the existing coating can affect adhesion. A small test area is especially important when the existing paint type is unknown.

How to Apply Tough Prime Black

Before applying

Stir Tough Prime Black thoroughly before use. Do not shake.

Do not apply when the surface temperature or air temperature is below 10°C.

Brush

Apply a thin, uniform coat using a good-quality brush. Use overlapping strokes and maintain a wet edge.

Roller

Apply evenly with a good-quality roller. Change roller direction regularly to minimise patterns and streaking.

Spray

Tough Prime may be applied using a spray gun. Use appropriate equipment, ventilation and precautions, and read the current SDS before spraying.

Recommended stage-floor application

Apply Tough Prime Black in thin, even and uniform coats. Do not attempt to build the finish with one heavy coat.

For a more durable coating, Rosco recommends applying several thin coats and allowing each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next.

Rosco does not specify one fixed number of coats for every surface. The number required will depend on the condition, porosity, colour and intended use of the stage.

Should Tough Prime Black be diluted?

Use it undiluted for most applications.

Rosco states that when brushing, water may be added as necessary to achieve the appropriate viscosity. Rosco does not publish a fixed dilution ratio for Tough Prime.

Avoid adding an arbitrary amount of water. Test any adjustment on a small area before applying it across the full stage.

Application temperature and conditions

Do not apply Tough Prime when the surface temperature or air temperature is below 10°C (50°F).

Temperature, humidity, airflow, substrate porosity and coating thickness will affect drying and recoating times.

Coverage

Approx. 1 m² Estimated coverage from your sample under suitable application conditions.
Approx. 28 m² Rosco's published theoretical coverage per 3.79 L container.
These figures describe approximate coverage for one coat. Actual coverage will vary according to the porosity and texture of the stage, application method, roller or brush type and the thickness of the coating.
Estimating paint for a complete stage

First calculate the stage area by multiplying its length by its width. Consider the number of coats required and allow for surface porosity, texture, edges, touch-ups and application loss.

For assistance calculating the quantity required, contact Creative Film & Theatre Solutions with your stage dimensions and a brief description of its existing surface.

Drying & Recoating

At an average temperature of 24°C, Rosco publishes the following guidance:

30–45 min Approximate time until the coating is touch dry.
1–2 hrs Approximate time before applying another coat.
These are average laboratory-style conditions, not guaranteed project times. Cooler temperatures, high humidity, poor airflow, porous surfaces and heavier coats may increase drying time.

Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before recoating. Avoid placing the stage into service simply because the surface feels dry to the touch. Dry-to-touch time is not the same as complete curing or maximum durability.

Rosco's Tough Prime technical data publishes touch-dry and recoat times but does not state a specific full-cure or return-to-service time. Assess conditions carefully and contact CFATS when project timing is critical.

Clean-Up

Clean with soap and water

Rosco specifies soap and water for cleaning Tough Prime.

Clean brushes, rollers, spray equipment and suitable tools promptly after use. Do not allow Tough Prime Black to dry inside application equipment.

Contain spills and clean them promptly while following the precautions in the current Safety Data Sheet.

Storing Your Sample

Close the sample container securely after use and store it upright in a suitable location away from children.

Protect Tough Prime Black from freezing.

Because the sample has been decanted from Rosco's original container, it is intended for product evaluation rather than long-term storage. Keep the lid and rim clean so the container can reseal correctly.
