Studio floors and stage floors take a beating that ordinary floor paint is not built for. Scenery gets dragged across them, marks get taped and lifted daily, and the surface has to photograph and light correctly while it does. Rosco Tough Prime
- Rosco Tough Prime Black (6055) for the classic deep black stage floor, and for studio floors that need to disappear under lighting.
- Rosco Tough Prime White (6050) as a primer and sealer under scenic paint, chroma key paint, or a light studio finish.
Both work as a primer, a sealer and a finish coat, which is what makes them practical for a venue with a short changeover window. One product does the sealing and the colour, rather than a primer plus a topcoat plus a drying schedule you do not have time for.
What it is for
Tough Prime is designed for absorbent, rigid surfaces. In practice that means timber and plywood stage floors, MDF, scenery flats, rostra, treads and studio subfloors. It seals the substrate so the surface stops drinking paint unevenly, then gives you a hard, matte finish that survives traffic and cleaning.
Where a floor gets repainted between seasons, sealing properly the first time is what stops each repaint sitting worse than the last.
What it is not for
Do not paint a vinyl dance floor. Marley and vinyl performance surfaces are designed to flex, and a hard floor coating will crack and lift on them. If you need a black or grey surface over an existing floor for a season, or a studio needs a dance-safe surface rather than a painted one, use a laid vinyl floor instead. The short version. Timber and flats get painted. Vinyl gets laid over. Mixing those two up is the most expensive mistake we see on floor jobs.
Scenery flats and set pieces
The same Tough Prime White that seals a floor is what most scenic shops use to prime and seal flats before the scenic paint goes on. Sealing raw timber and MDF first is the difference between a flat that takes colour evenly and one that shows every join and grain line under a wash. It pairs with the Rosco scenic paint range, including Off Broadway and Supersaturated, for the colour coats.
