Dance Floor Mats vs Full Rolls: Choosing a Portable Floor

Not every dance floor needs to cover a whole room. A competition warm-up area, a touring show, a pop-up class or a student's practice space each call for a different format. This guide compares a portable dance floor mat, cut lengths and full rolls, plus modular tiles, so you can match the format to how the floor will actually be used.

Dance floor mats

The Rosco Marley Mat is a cut piece of Adagio Tour, the floor used by professional touring companies and competitions, supplied with matching Rosco floor tape. It rolls out in minutes on any smooth, level surface and rolls back into its box for storage. Rosco describes the surface as a limited slip grip suitable for ballet, jazz, modern and tap.

Mats suit studios that want a few portable practice spots, competition teams that need a consistent warm-up surface, and students practising at home. Rosco does not recommend laying a mat over carpet or foam, which can make it lumpy or cause it to tear. Our guide to marley floors for home practice covers set-up and care.

Cut lengths and full rolls

For a full studio or stage, buy the floor by the linear metre or by the roll. All four Rosco vinyl floors we supply are available both ways. Choosing between them comes down to handling, as much as coverage.

Floor Width Weight per metre Full roll
Adagio Tour 1.6 m 2.32 kg 31 m, about 72 kg
Rosco Dance Floor 1.6 m 2.56 kg 40 m, about 103 kg
Duètte 2 m 3.2 kg 40 m, about 128 kg
Adagio 1.6 m 3.52 kg 31 m, about 109 kg

Weights from the Rosco spec sheets for each floor.

  • For touring, lighter floors are easier to load and lay every night. Adagio Tour is the lightest per metre, and Rosco rates Adagio Tour, Dance Floor and Duètte as excellent for temporary and touring use.
  • For fewer seams, Duètte's 2 m width covers the same area in fewer strips.
  • For a floor that stays down, Adagio is the only one of the four Rosco rates as excellent for permanent, glued installation.

From a touring company. Connecticut Ballet moved their touring floor to Rosco Duètte because their old marley arrived wavy after hot or cold truck journeys. Rosco reports the new floor lay flat as soon as it was rolled out. Read more in our ballet flooring guide.

Modular tiles

Rosco Studio Tiles are 0.91 m square, 3 mm thick and come in black, grey or white. Rosco rates their surface as very fast and recommends them for tap, Irish, clogging, flamenco and ballroom, as well as TV and film studios, events, exhibitions and fashion shows. Tiles are rated good for temporary use and excellent for semi-permanent and permanent installation. Rosco's manual covers laying them from the centre of the room so border tiles are equal on opposite walls.

Storing a portable floor

Rosco's storage advice applies whatever the format:

  • Sweep the floor before rolling it, so grit is not rolled into the vinyl.
  • Roll tightly on a solid core, such as a PVC pipe at least 75 mm (3 inches) in diameter, keeping the edges straight.
  • Tape the roll closed and wrap it in polyethylene.
  • Never stack anything heavy on a rolled floor or mat. Rosco warns that the waves this causes are very hard to remove.
  • Rosco recommends hanging rolls of Rosco Dance Floor on a floor cart, and standing Adagio rolls on end.
