Blackwrap. Cinefoil. Photofoil. One black foil, three names.
Matte black aluminium foil that bends and holds its shape to block, flag, wrap and shape light exactly where you want it. It's the gaffer's and photographer's most-used tool for killing spill and reflections — and yes, the three names are the same material at different sizes.
Clearing it up
Blackwrap = Cinefoil = Photofoil
Different brands and eras gave the same product different names. It's all matte black-anodised aluminium foil for controlling light. The only real difference is the size of the piece.
Blackwrap / Cinefoil
The trade names for the full rolls used on film sets and in theatres — "Blackwrap" (GAM/Rosco) and "Cinefoil" are the same black foil. Sold in wide rolls to wrap barndoors, build snoots and flag big sources.
Photofoil
The photographer-friendly name for the compact, tube-packed sizes — a 12" or 24" length that rolls up and drops in a camera bag or backpack. Same foil, ready for location and studio stills.
So which do I buy?
Choose by size, not name. Want it in your bag? Photofoil. Kitting a truck or lighting store? A wide Blackwrap roll. The material and finish are identical.
What it does
The most useful black on set
Flag & cut light
Shape a beam, cut spill off a wall or lens, and stop light going where it shouldn't — moulded to any angle by hand.
Wrap hot fixtures
Wrap around barndoors and fixture edges to tighten a beam or mask a leak. Heat-resistant, so it sits happily near tungsten and hot LEDs.
DIY snoots & gobos
Roll a snoot, punch a slot, build a quick gobo or a light-tight boot around a connector — the foil holds whatever shape you fold.
Kill reflections
Line the inside of a set, box or prop to stop unwanted bounce and glare reading on camera.
Block & mask
Seal light gaps around doors, windows and set joins, or black out a small area fast without building anything.
Studio & location
Equally at home on a film set, a theatre rig, or a stills shoot — the compact photofoil sizes go anywhere.

When you need to kill light completely
Foil flags and wraps, but for full black-out and no-bounce jobs these Rosco blacks finish the job.

Black open-weave scrim to knock down and diffuse without colour shift — light control where solid foil is too much.

Reversible silver/black scrim — block or bounce from one roll for fast, reversible control.

Permanent black
Blacking out a wall, floor or surface for good?
Foil and scrim are for rigging and quick fixes. If you need a permanent, ultra-matte black surface — a black-box wall, a projection surface or a stage floor — reach for Rosco's black paints instead.
