Water, fire, cloud, foliage and aurora, generated in optics as organic, non-repeating movement — no media server, no LED screen, no haze machine. Rosco X-Effects turns a single projector into living light.

The intent

When a space needs to feel alive, not lit

Some briefs aren’t about brightness or colour — they’re about life. A reception that should feel like it sits underwater. A restaurant wall that flickers like a real fire. A ceiling that drifts with cloud. The moment movement repeats or reads as a video loop, the illusion breaks.

The instinct is often to reach for a screen or a media server. But screens announce themselves, loops become obvious, and haze-based effects need atmosphere to be visible. Rosco’s X-Effects takes a different route: it generates movement optically, with two independently-rotating glass effect discs, so the pattern layers over itself and never repeats in a way the eye can catch.

The result is movement that behaves like the real thing — and lands on a real surface, at architectural scale, from a fixture you can conceal.

How it’s made

Real light on real surfaces

The effect is projected onto architecture — walls, floors, ceilings, water features — not confined to a display panel or emissive screen.

15,000 sq ft of moving water

For The Blue Paradox — an immersive ocean-conservation exhibit at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry — the brief was a feeling: visitors should sense they had stepped beneath the surface of the sea.

Roughly 200 Rosco X-Effects projectors layer non-repeating water across the environment, bright and convincing enough to hold their own against heavy ambient projection. No two moments look quite the same.

What to think about early

A few decisions shape how convincing and how concealed the effect will be. CFATS can test these with you on the actual surface before anything is specified.

Effect & disc choice

Water, fire, cloud, foliage and other effects are set by the glass effect discs selected — the starting point for the look you want.

Surface & scale

The receiving surface, throw distance and coverage area determine fixture count and lens choice. Larger fields simply layer more projectors.

Ambient light

How much competing light sits in the space affects perceived contrast. We assess this against the real conditions, not a datasheet.

Concealment & mounting

Because the source is a discrete projector, it can usually be hidden — mounting, sightlines and access are worth resolving up front.
